  • Has 7 health center sites in underserved communities throughout Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties serving over 34,000 patients.
  • Oversees several federal, state, and county contracts and/or grants that focus on clinical operations, patient outcomes, and access to care and services.
  • Provides health assessments for refugees, asylees, and special visa holders for the state of Maryland.  The program currently sees around 2,100 patients on an annual basis.

POSITION SUMMARY: 
CCI Health Services is seeking a Medical Interpreter for our Refugee Health Assessment Program. The Medical Interpreter will play a crucial role in facilitating communication between healthcare providers, clinical support staff, and refugee patients with limited-to-no English proficiency. The primary responsibility of the Medical interpreter will be to ensure accurate and effective interpretation during medical appointments, help bridge language gaps, and promote understanding and trust for newly arrived refugees, asylees, and/or special visa holders. This role is essential in supporting CCI’s commitment to providing high-quality, culturally competent healthcare services to our diverse patient population. 


KEY FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Precisely and accurately interprets critical medical advice and information given by the clinician into equivalent terminology in the patient's native language. Information can include health assessments, consultations, treatment protocols, and medically necessary referral information.  

  • Provides interpretation either in-person or through telephonic/virtual visits. 

  • Establishes and maintains quality service and positive interaction with all patients, visitors, clinicians and clinical employees.  

  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality in accordance with CCI policies and procedures and HIPAA regulations.  

  • Provides translation of medical documents, including records and prescriptions.  

  • Assist with patient follow-up as necessary, to include contacting patients with appointment reminder in appropriate language. 

  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to stay current with medical terminology and best practices in interpretation. 

  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to identify and address any barriers to effective communication and care. 

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned. 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent, required.  

  • Proficiency in English and at least one other language such as: Persian/Dari, Haitian Creole, Spanish, Arabic, Pushto/Pashto, French, Swahili, Tigrinya, Kinyarwanda, and/or Ukrainian, required. 

  • Certification from the Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) and/or the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI), required.  

  • Knowledge of medical terminology required.  

  • Current Basical Life Support (CPR) certification.  

  • Must have at least one (1) year of relevant work experience, preferably in a healthcare setting. Primary care, community health, or safety-net clinic experience is a plus.  

  • Ability to navigate information on the Internet and within an Electronic Health Record. MS Office experience, preferred. Familiarity with eClinicalWorks, a plus.  

  • Experience working with refugee or immigrant communities, highly desirable.  


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Ability to maintain a high standard of customer service and observance of corporation protocol in a complex environment. 

  • Ability to document messages, as well as present information in a clear, detailed, and concise manner. 

  • Must be able to work between two locations across Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties.   

  • Ability to work on-site is an essential duty for this position.  

  • Other duties as assigned.
